The relaxed elegance of the Montalto Restaurant is set in a striking and harmonious landscape building featuring rammed earth walls, timber frames and rough-hewn floor boards to blur the edges of inside and out, bringing the beauty of the outside in. Floor to ceiling windows take advantage of the breathtaking rural outlook of vines, olive groves, sculpture leading down to picturesque lakes and wetlands, with pasture, and a hint of the ocean as the backdrop.
The Montalto Restaurant is imbued with a provincial spirit, from a personal greeting at the front door to the food on the plate in front of you. Led by Head Chef Barry Davis, the kitchen serves food inspired by regional France, but anchored in the fresh seasonal produce of the estate and the Mornington Peninsula.
This includes Montalto’s own expansive, organic herb and vegetable garden, fruit & nut orchard and berry garden to which chefs make daily visits, harvesting the best of the garden for use in the restaurant. The kitchen works with owner Wendy Mitchell to determine what is planted each season, bringing the chefs into greater connection with the growing season.nnAs part of the regional dining experience, the wine list offers selections from highly regarded Mornington Peninsula, Australian and international wineries, in addition to current and museum release estate wines.

Montalto combines exceptional wines with one of the most beautiful vineyard settings we’ve visited. The staff were knowledgeable, welcoming and happy to explain each tasting in detail. We finished with lunch in the restaurant where every course showcased outstanding local produce. It was an experience well worth making the trip for.
Everything about Montalto felt polished yet relaxed. The vineyard views were stunning, the wines were excellent and the restaurant delivered beautifully presented dishes full of flavour. The team provided genuine hospitality throughout our visit, making it one of the highlights of our weekend in the Yarra Valley.
Our afternoon at Montalto was everything we hoped for. The cellar door experience was relaxed and informative, giving us plenty of time to enjoy each wine without feeling rushed. Lunch overlooked the vineyard and featured beautifully prepared seasonal dishes that paired perfectly with the estate wines. We’ll definitely return on our next Yarra Valley trip.
